Position Summary:
General Statement of the Organization

The SOU Small Business Development Center (SOU SBDC) was established in 1984, and provides business advising, seminars, workshops, and specialized programs for business retention and expansion. The SOU SBDC is part of a network of 20 Small Business Development Centers throughout the State of Oregon. The SBDC is within the School of Science and Business, which supports the interface between SOU and the regional business community. The SBDC is located in Medford at the Higher Education Center. The Market Research Institute is a specialized statewide service of the Oregon SBDC Network for use by businesses throughout Oregon for advanced market research and analytics, typically delivered through the State SBDC Network or partner agencies.

Position Description

The MRI Data Analyst 3 works for the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at SOU, a special program under the School of Science and Business. Housed at the SOU SBDC, the Market Research Institute (MRI) is a specialized service made available to business owners statewide through the Oregon Small Business Development Center Network. The Market Research Institute’s main service is developing customized market and industry research reports for business clients based on a variety of secondary sources. With guidance from the MRI Director, the Data Analyst 3 position leads research projects, including communications with the client and their SBDC adviser to understand their business goals and information needs, research planning and development, analysis, report preparation, report delivery, and process tracking and documentation. The Data Analyst 3 may be assisted by a student research assistant. Primary research projects, such as surveys or feasibility studies, and other original research may also be a part of this position.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Two years of research experience independently gathering, compiling, and analyzing data using statistical methods (inferential, multivariate analysis, etc.); using statistical software packages to manipulate the data, and preparing narrative reports; and
  • A Bachelors degree in Business, Mathematics, Data Management, Computer Science, or Data Analytics, or a relevant degree as determined by the review committee; or
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Two years of research experience independently gathering, compiling, and analyzing data using statistical methods (inferential, multivariate analysis, etc.); using statistical software packages to manipulate the data, and preparing narrative reports; and
  • A Bachelors degree in Business, Mathematics, Data Management, Computer Science, or Data Analytics, or a relevant degree as determined by the review committee; or
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience.

Two years of research experience independently gathering, compiling, and analyzing data using statistical methods (inferential, multivariate analysis, etc.); using statistical software packages to manipulate the data; and preparing narrative or statistical reports and college-level course in statistics (at least six quarter hours);
OR
An equivalent combination of training and experience.

Preferred Qualification:
Experience as a lead researcher utilizing Qualtrics or other program to design, conduct and analyze surveys or other primary research; Small business management experience in the private sector, preferably as an owner.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Candidates for this position should have a well-rounded skill set, including:

Ability to find, learn, use, and evaluate data sources, interpret data and provide accurate descriptions of the available data and its limitations; Ability to analyze and synthesize diverse datasets into understandable, actionable intelligence that supports client needs; Ability to format documents, develop spreadsheets, and utilize publishing programs in order to produce high quality written reports supported by clear and effective graphics that will be understandable to a diverse clientele; Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills; Ability to take direction and to work within parameters to produce on-point, timely data and reports; Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to clearly present technical information to diverse audiences; Strong relational and communication skills in working with clients, colleagues, students, and partner organizations; Ability to collaborate with and provide guidance to a student assistant who may be working remotely to produce timely, reliable work and create a valuable learning experience for the student; Strong organizational and time management skills and the ability to work with a high level of productivity and accuracy/attention to detail; Be open and available to accepting projects on behalf of the MRI relating to Institute development, database management, marketing, and other areas of need as requested by the MRI Director; Willingness and ability to adhere to the vision, values, and mission of SOU, and to comply with all applicable rules regarding working with diverse populations; Working knowledge, or ability to quickly learn, university infrastructure, policies and procedures.

Special Conditions
Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
Must be able to work additional hours and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background check.
