Summary
The Center for Health Communications Research (CHCR) at the University of Michigan is hiring a UX Designer! We’ll be accepting applications until the position has been filled, with a flexible start date.
About CHCR
The Center for Health Communications Research (CHCR) is a fully remote software development team at the University of Michigan, within the Michigan Medicine division. We build custom software app solutions for academic and medical researchers. We also build software relating to Cancer research because we are a shared resource for the Rogel Cancer Center at UM. As an intentionally small development team and independent center, we are able to select which projects excite us the most and partner with those researchers. We have employees currently across four domains: engineering, design, behavior, and project management. CHCR has existed for over 25 years strong, as we design our products to help education, sciences, and the humanities.
About this Position
Most companies will split roles like copywriting, content creation, and graphics into multiple positions. At CHCR we believe that the best designed products come from someone who can follow the content across the development process from concept to completion. This means that we are looking for more of a generalist. Someone who at times can be a storyteller, visual stylist, video/audio editor, writer, survey creator, and social media contributor.
We are not only looking for a storyteller but also a versatile individual who can research new topics, execute compelling copywriting, integrate graphics and words to convey narratives, strategize survey content flow, test our designs, and manage social media.
This role demands a high degree of independence and productivity, requiring someone who can apply enthusiasm to every aspect of their work, from the largest of your work to the smallest of its details. At the beginning of each development sprint you will be given your goals and it will be up to you to break down each goal into tasks and effectively manage your time. How you decide to implement your tasks and vision will be left up to you and it is important that you can complete your tasks without major oversight. Clear communication is vital and questions are encouraged and embraced after your weekly goals have been established. Successfully knowing how to independently manage your time is vital.
Additionally, we are looking for someone who understands that the arrangements of words contribute to the graphical elements of design. Graphics shape word structure and word structure shape graphics, so effective knowledge of industry standards and good practices around microcopy and writing for web components as well as a strong sense of design is essential for this position.
CHCR is a fully remote team at the University of Michigan, and this is a remote job. We work 5 days a week (M-F), and 8 hours a day (9-5pm EST). You must be available during those times and be a U.S. citizen with a U.S. address, in order to be considered.
The team uses the latest Apple Computer products, and you will be provided with a new laptop, display, and other accessories.
Benefits & Compensation
Salaries are dependent on education and experience. We do everything we can to help every employee lead a healthy work-life balance. This position comes with 2 accruable vacation days per month, which totals 1 month of time-off vacation per year. We also provide a bank of sick days (12/year) and holidays (11/year) that are fully paid. We also provide paid parental leave, college tuition compensation, 2x matching retirement, and a generous health insurance package.
What You’ll Do
As a UX Designer you’ll be working on the software development team building feature rich applications. Your work will be dynamic and innovative and will include envisioning content, creating it from scratch, and improving existing content.
