The Center for Student Success (CSS) seeks a creative, team-oriented individuals to support the social and educational experiences delivered via programming offered through the FLI Network, the hub for programming, communications and engagement for a growing, vibrant and diverse population of first-generation and/or limited-income (FLI) students on the Homewood Campus.

The Assistant Director in the FLI Network will demonstrate cross-cultural nuance in planning and implementing programming specific to FLI students. The overall objectives of programming are community-building, identity development, and navigating the hidden curriculum. In addition, the role is responsible for and has creative influence over the communications to students and the campus community related to signature programming and signature events organized by the FLI Network. The dual focus on programming and communications supports the FLI Network during its next phase of transition. As the FLI Network evolves, the staffing roles that belong to the programming team will be reviewed and aligned with the next phase of growth.

This role has a highly visible presence within the CSS and must possess a willingness and talent for engaging students, have experience in program planning, development, and implementation, and an appreciation for the student-centered mission of the Center for Student Success.

The position reports to the Director of the FLI Network and works in tight partnership with the Associate Director for Programming and Program Coordinator. As a key member of the programming team, this role requires confidence and poise in engaging a range of partners in the CSS and across the Homewood campus (faculty, staff, alum, and students). It also requires a considerable degree of independent action.

Essential Job Functions

FLI Network programming (35%)

  • Support the Associate Director of Programming in refining the programming calendar for the academic year, which includes signature programming, signature events, and program-specific events (e.g. JUMP, SFP, SCAA, etc.). As needed during the academic year, coordinate daytime, evening, and weekend programs with other campus departments and organizations (i.e. Life Design, Financial Aid, Study Abroad, etc.).
  • Support the design and implementation of FLI Network signature programs.
  • Support the design and implementation of FLI Network signature events (welcome reception, National First- Generation Day, Halfway There, and a graduation celebration).
  • In coordination with CSS programs (JUMP, SFP, SCAA), support their program-specific events and workshops.
  • Support the Associate Director of Programming in administering the FLI Network Book Loan Program.
  • Stay current on best practices for supporting and engaging underrepresented racial minority, limited-income, and first-generation college students.

FLI Network communications (25%)

  • Plan and produce engaging and informative written, visual, and multimedia content in support of communications objectives for FLI Network signature programming and signature events.
  • Participate in CQI process for communications efforts to include FLI Network newsletters, mailings, flyers, and promotional materials.
  • Working with program coordinator and student interns, market and advertise events via social media, flyers, etc.
  • Support FLI Network outreach efforts to FLI families, staff and faculty, including the FLI Network Directory.

Hop-In Program (30%)

  • Support the Associate Director of Programming/ Director of Hop-In in preparing for and implementing the summer program. Work with Director to coordinate workshops, events and trips for the Hop-In Summer Program. As needed, coordinate daytime, evening, and weekend programs with CSS programs and other campus departments and organizations.
  • Provide almost daily on-site supervision of events and activities.
  • Support the process of recruiting incoming students into Hop-In, in coordination with the overall process of recruiting FLI students into CSS-based programs.
  • Support the Director to recruit, train and supervise summer GA and Hop-In peer leaders for their roles during the summer program and throughout the first year for the new Hop-In cohort.
  • Support the Director in administering and managing the for Hop-In Summer Tuition Grant program.

Administrative (10%):

  • Develop and manage programming-related budget and logistical outlines.
  • General administrative work related to programming and communications.

Special Skills, Knowledge, or Abilities

  • Demonstrated capacity to work effectively with persons from diverse backgrounds and to foster sensitivity to diversity and an inclusive campus and community culture.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively and efficiently perform duties and responsibilities with attention to detail and support for organizational policies, as well as the ability to anticipate demands/pressures of assignments and adjust accordingly.
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, and as part of a team.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and oral communication, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Solid knowledge of and fluency within social media platforms.
  • Experience using content management systems (e.g. WordPress) and email marketing platforms; familiarity with HTML/CSS.
  • Professional maturity that fosters a positive work environment and ability to use appropriate judgment when dealing with sensitive issues.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with computers and basic software applications including Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, etc.
  • Must be able to flex working hours as required for some evening/weekend events and programming.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in multicultural education, higher education administration, intercultural communication, event planning, student affairs administration, counseling, or other related field required.
  • 3 years of relevant experience required in designing, coordinating, and evaluating educational, social, or cultural activities and/or leadership programs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2-3 years of relevant experience required working in an environment with competing priorities that require the coordination and management of students, resources, and timelines.
  • Proven ability to work across organizational boundaries as an effective member of a team, and a demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with a wide range of campus and community constituencies.
