Overview

The UX/UI Designer and Frontend Developer is part of the Web Services team within the Information
Technology Services (ITS) department at Macalester College, a vibrant liberal arts community in St. Paul, MN. In this hybrid role, you will
be responsible for contributing to both the design and development of Macalester’s digital experience, from the college’s
massive WordPress site to web applications and beyond. You will work closely with colleagues across the institution to understand user
needs, design and develop user-friendly interfaces, and implement those designs using the latest web technologies alongside our team’s
full-stack developer. As part of those latest technologies, this role may also have the opportunity to learn AI administration as we
consider deploying AI within web projects.

Responsibilities

UX Design:

  • Conduct user research, including interviews, surveys, and usability testing
  • Design wireframes, prototypes, and mockups, and
    update them based on stakeholder feedback
  • Provide UX design support to other teams’ digital projects
  • Ensure the
    digital experience is accessible and inclusive for all users

UI Design:

  • Create visually
    appealing and UX-focused web-application interfaces, WordPress themes/page templates, and broadcast email templates
  • Maintain a
    digital design system/library to help our team (and others) adhere to Macalester’s visual identity across all platforms

Frontend Development:

  • Develop and maintain responsive and accessible web resources (themes, page
    templates), broadcast email templates, and web applications using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
  • With the support of the full-stack
    developer, integrate with backend APIs and databases
  • Test and debug code to ensure functionality across platforms and browsers, and
    that it integrates with existing code
  • Collaborate on coding projects, including following DevOps best practices and providing
    documentation so other team members can work with your code now and in the future

Other:

  • Demonstrate commitment to equity, inclusion, and diversity. Actively engage in learning and practicing principles of social justice and

  • Help with the administration of Macalester’s web content management system
    (WordPress) and the resolution of web-related requests
  • Collaborate with colleagues across departments, especially Communications
    and Marketing
  • Stay up-to-date on the latest trends and best practices in UX/UI design and web development


Qualifications

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • 2+ years of professional experience (or
    demonstrated equivalent) with UX/UI design, along with developing and maintaining frontend web resources
  • Proficient in
    HTML, CSS (including CSS frameworks/preprocessors) and JavaScript (including at least one framework/library). React JS and Twig experience
    preferred. Web/code portfolio optional
  • Experience with administration of and frontend development for WordPress web content
    management systems

  • Experience with and strong understanding of user-centered design principles, responsive design, and
    accessibility best practices. Design portfolio optional

  • Experience with design and prototyping tools such as Figma or
    Sketch and version control systems such as Git. Design system/library (e.g. Storybook) experience preferred

  • Proven success
    in managing multiple projects, meeting deadlines, and adapting to changing priorities/approaches. Strong problem-solving skills and a track
    record of applying those skills to help others. Ability to identify, evaluate, and apply new technologies

  • Demonstrated
    ability to work both cooperatively and independently in a team-based work setting. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a
    strong service orientation

Compensation:

The annual salary for this position is $60,000-$64,000,
depending on experience.
