Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Climate Change at University of the West Indies

Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons for the post of Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Climate Change in the Centre for Resource Management & Environmental Studies, Faculty of Science and Technology at The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, Barbados.

Qualifications/Experience

The successful candidate should possess:

• A PhD in atmospheric science, climatology, meteorology, geoscience or a related subject area from an accredited university
• A minimum of 5 years’ experience (7 years in the case of Senior Lecturer) in teaching and, conducting scholarly research in inter alia; climate change and climate variability, risk, vulnerability, adaptation and mitigation, impact of climate change and variability on natural resources and ecosystems, impacts of climate change and variability on human society and economies
• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the global architecture and negotiating processes aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and the mechanisms available to support the achievement of this objective
• Demonstrated ability or significant potential for establishing a research program capable of attracting external funding, managing projects and budgets
• Peer reviewed research outputs  
• Demonstrated research accomplishments

The applicant must also be willing and committed to providing mentorship to graduate students and post-doctoral fellows, as required. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be responsible for the Climate Change specialization stream within CERMES teaching programme. In addition, they will provide academic support to the Cave Hill Centre for Bio-Security Studies on matters related to climate change and climate variability impacts on aspects such as coastal erosion and infrastructure, health concerns, poverty and livelihoods, food production systems.

CERMES has a responsibility to the Caribbean Region and as such you will be expected to work with and support national, regional, and international organisations involved in climate modelling and research on climate change mitigation and adaptation. Other attributes that are desirable include: excellent oral communication, writing and analytical skills, team working and leadership skills. It is anticipated that you will have experience in the use of web-based teaching and on-line learning.

CERMES is a postgraduate Centre within the University of the West Indies. It offers taught masters programmes in Natural Resources Management and Renewable Energy Management with particular emphasis on Tropical Small Island Developing States (SIDS). Within the Natural Resources Management programme there are 3 specialisations; tropical coastal and marine resources management, climate change and, water resources management. The specialization courses are offered in the second semester.  CERMES also undertakes research related to SIDS, provides services to regional governments, NGOs and the private sector and, conducts outreach and capacity building on environmental matters throughout the Region.
