The AHA Journals Scientific Publishing team is looking for a part-time Scientific Journals Editorial Intern interested in developing experience in scientific journal publishing and peer review. The selected candidate will coordinate projects to streamline the manuscript submission system, assist with a transition of the journals’ publication platform, and handle documentation for the AHA’s Scientific Statements and Guidelines, as well as other tasks as identified.

The American Heart Association’s Internship Program provides college students an opportunity for hands-on experience in various facets for individuals interested in gaining work experience with a non-profit, voluntary health organization.

Individuals will acquire practical experience and receive hands-on training in scientific publishing. In this position, you will work closely with the scientific publishing team to support the overall management of the AHA journals.

Internship Overview:

• Time Commitment: 20-25 hours per week
• Internship Duration: 5/20/24 – 8/9/24
• Location: Remote position
• Salary: $23.00 per hour

Responsibilities

Tasks could include things like the following:

Manuscript Submission and Peer Review

• Audits and prioritizes templates and reports across the journal submission sites.
• Develops and implements consistent language for instruction pages.
• Researches manuscripts in the submission system and external databases such as PubMed.

American Heart Association Scientific Statements and Guidelines

• Compiles and reviews author and reviewer disclosure statements.
• Handles reprint permission requests and relevant communications with journal publisher.

Journal Publication Platform

• Supports journal directors during journal site redesign and migration.
• Completes quality check of migrated pages and code pages as appropriate.

Special Projects:

• Coordinates journals’ WeChat program and other social media activities as needed.
• Formalizes and documents staff training material.
• Assists management with special projects as needed/assigned.

Qualifications

• This role is adjacent to science. It is not a scientific role. Based on the responsibilities, this internship would not be a good position for students interested in or studying writing and/or communications.
• 3-4 years of college or university coursework in non-profit, public administration, public health, chemistry, biology, or a curiosity about publishing as a career required.
• Experience managing projects, databases, and electronic reporting tools required.
• Experience working with volunteers, particularly science volunteers.
• Strong customer service and social skills.
• Ability to communicate information accurately and optimally to diverse audiences.
• Strong attention to detail.
• Excellent proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
• Familiarity with social media platforms.
• Required Equipment: Reliable WiFi Connection
• Minimum availability of 20 hrs/wk, M-F between the hours of 8:30am-5pm ET or CT.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship, now or in the future. For any roles working remotely, the work must also be performed inside the United States, not in a foreign country.
