Job Description

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine is a world-leading centre for research and postgraduate education in public and global health. Our mission is to improve health and health equity in the UK and worldwide; working in partnership to achieve excellence in public and global health research, education and translation of knowledge into policy and practice.

We are seeking to appoint an experienced, motivated, pro-active, and enthusiastic Research Fellow to join the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Policy Research Unit Policy Innovation and Evaluation (PIRU) and the NIHR Policy Research Unit in Health and Social Care Systems and Commissioning (PRUComm). The role will be split equally between the two units.

PIRU aims to improve policymaking by evaluating new policies in public health, health services and social care in their early stages while PRUComm aims to provide evidence to the Department of Health and Social Care to inform the development of policy on the health and social care system and commissioning.

The postholder will have strong quantitative analytical skills and will support the development, delivery and analysis of new surveys as well as the analysis of existing survey and routine data, which may include the Health Survey for England, Longitudinal Study of Ageing, and service utilisation data such as the hospital episode statistics or community health services’ activities.

Applicants must have a postgraduate degree in a relevant field (social policy, health policy, health economics, or closely related discipline), should be confident in using statistical packages like STATA, R or similar, and have experience analysing large data sets. Evidence of academic writing is also required. Further particulars are included in the job description.

The post is immediately available, full-time and for 36 months. The salary will be on the Academic Pathway salary scale, Grade 6 in the range £43,947 – £49,908 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting). The posts will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Wellbeing Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available. The post is based in London.

LSHTM has a Hybrid Working Framework, which alongside agreed service requirements, enables teams to work more flexibly (if the role allows), promoting a greater wellbeing and work/life balance.

Applications should be made by clicking the ‘Apply’ button above. Online applications will be accepted by the automated system until 10pm of the closing date. Any queries may be addressed to jobs@lshtm.ac.uk.

The supporting statement section should set out how your qualifications, experience and training meet each of the selection criteria. Please provide one or more paragraphs addressing each criterion. The supporting statement is an essential part of the selection process and thus a failure to provide this information will mean that the application will not be considered. An answer to any of the criteria such as “Please see attached CV” will not be considered acceptable.

Please note that if you are shortlisted and are unable to attend on the interview date it may not be possible to offer you an alternative date.
