Job Description


The Department of Psychology, University of Alberta, invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Comparative Cognition and Behaviour, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2024. 

Position Summary:

The successful candidate will be expected to develop an innovative and robust externally-funded research program and other activities relating to Comparative Cognition and Behaviour; regularly engage in relevant domestic and international research networks; supervise and mentor graduate students; and provide service to the Department, the Faculty, the University, as well as to professional and external communities. We have laboratory space for housing many different species, including (but not limited to) rodents, birds, fish, insects, etc. Candidates whose work includes field populations are also welcome and encouraged to apply.

Qualifications: 

  • PhD in Psychology or a closely related field (e.g., Animal Behaviour, Animal Cognition, Behavioural Ecology, Neuroscience) by the date of the appointment or shortly thereafter.
  • Postdoctoral experience is preferred.
  • Active research program in the area(s) listed above.
  • Demonstrated potential to develop an innovative research program that is externally funded.
  • Research record that displays potential for excellence in any area of Comparative Cognition and Behaviour, such as animal cognition, animal learning and memory, cognitive ecology, mechanisms of behaviour, neuroethology, or social behaviour.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to the Departmental teaching mission in Comparative Cognition and Behaviour and related areas by offering psychology courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Clear potential to mentor graduate students.
  • Evidence of commitment to and engagement with Equity, Diversity and Inclusion principles and the EDI values of the Department.
  • Interest in (and, possibly, record of) pursuing interdisciplinary connections to develop and advance the interactions of comparative research with other disciplines or for areas of societal concern, including (but not limited to) neuroscience, artificial intelligence, conservation efforts, mental health, and behavioural treatment programs.
