Essential Functions

Job
Summary

Function: To provide leadership and executive management in the operations, oversight, direction,
coordination, and execution of the communications and marketing in Academic Affairs (AA).

Scope: Responsible for developing,
implementing, and managing communications to support academic and university objectives in support of the Provost and Academic
Affairs.

Core Responsibilities

Typical:

  1. Creates, implements and manages communications
    efforts to support key strategies and objectives in collaboration with internal and external partners.
  2. Works closely with the
    president’s office and other vice president offices to create a uniform image, brand, and messaging and produce publications and
    communications strategies to further university objectives.
  3. Develops and executes a strategic plan for academic affairs
    communications in support of the university’s strategic plan and in alignment with the UTSA brand.
  4. Supervise the activities
    of the Strategic Messaging and Academic Support Divisions, Academic Creative Services, Academic Strategic Communications and Marketing, and
    Academic Web Development teams.
  5. Oversees the conceptualization, writing, editing and production of all print technology-based
    communications initiatives including social media, audio and video production, articles, and other electronic
    communications.
  6. Research and write formal speeches, as well as reports, presentations, media statements, and collateral
    materials for the Provost and other key senior leadership, as requested.
  7. Supports a wide range of large to small-scale
    special events, presentations, and other activities.
  8. Interfaces with University communications on requests from external news
    media.
  9. Prepare and supervise the administration of the communications budgets.
  10. Track upcoming events,
    coordinate with the AA staff and ensure necessary research and background information is received so that the Provost and other AA
    leadership are prepared.
  11. Seek out and respond to opportunities that will support and highlight Academic Affairs and its
    initiatives.
  12. Performs other duties as assigned.

Periodic:

  1. Attends institutional meetings
    and serves on committees.
  2. Prepares reports, grant proposals, and informational materials.

Required
Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • Seven years’ experience as a communications
    director or as a senior manager in a communications or public affairs office. A masters degree may substitute for one year of required
    experience.
  • Experience drafting executive speeches, opinion pieces, and remarks for events.
  • Demonstrated record
    of producing excellent press materials that convey a clear and consistent institutional image.
  • Excellent team-building skills
    and superior ability to work with people at all levels.
  • Demonstrated leadership, project management collaboration and
    administrative skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently research, write, package and produce content for complex
    projects, including visual and written components.
  • Ability to understand and creatively solve complex problems in a deadline
    driven environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and
    interpersonal skills.
  • Personal computers, Microsoft Office software suite, social media programs, and standard office
    equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution in English, communications,
    public relations, or related field.
  • Proven management and budgetary skills.
  • Similar experience in higher
    education communications, publications and marketing.
  • Experience working with senior university administrators and
    faculty.
  • Additional years of experience in writing and editing; and producing publications and working with Internet based
    publications.

Working Conditions

Working Environment:

  • Normal office
    conditions.
  • Weekend and evening work required.
  • This position is on-call 24/7 in response to emergency, crises
    and news-intensive events.

Physical Demands:

  • Sedentary work; sitting most of the time. Jobs
    are sedentary, if walking and standing are required, only occasionally.
  • Exerts up to 10 lbs. of force
    occasional

This position will be primarily located Hybrid-Regularly and will require working both
remotely and on campus (approximately three days on campus and two days remote each week). Travel and parking expenses are the employee’s
responsibility. Applicants must be adaptable and open to working in both environments.
