Associate Lecturer – Real Analysis at Birkbeck, University of London

Birkbeck, University of London, has an excellent opportunity for an Associate Lecturer in the School of Computing & Mathematics to teach the Real Analysis module this Summer Term.

As an Associate Lecturer you will be teaching Real Analysis, a level 6 module that is integral to Birkbeck’s online Graduate Certificate in Mathematics. The programme is a conversion course attended by strong, well-motivated adult learners with a background in a numerate discipline other than mathematics, and comprises of rigorous modules in algebra and analysis.

The module syllabus includes number systems, epsilon-delta analysis, sequences and series, continuity and differentiability, the Riemann integral and power series.

You will deliver nine 3-hour online teaching sessions, and set and mark coursework assignments, as well as the final written examination which takes place in July, and the reassessment examination which takes place in late August.

You will have a sound knowledge of real analysis and be capable of delivering such material via online lectures, as a first introduction to rigorous analysis. Ideally, you will have experience of setting a variety of assessments at undergraduate level.

Further to the person specification listed in the Job Description pack, essential requirements for the role of Associate Lecturer are:

• a good degree in Mathematics, or related subject, and experience of (or willingness to develop) a wide range of teaching and assessment methods;
• demonstrably effective communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, across a range of relevant contexts and platforms;
• a working knowledge of IT including Latex, Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook, and experience of (or willingness to use) Moodle;
• willingness to engage within a blended learning environment (with elements of both in-person teaching and the use of recorded materials).

Remuneration
Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College (starting rate £66.70 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay) for contact hours worked.

This hourly rate is based on starting point Grade 7 and includes ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ which covers preparation, teaching, assessment marking and administration in connection with the course.
