Job Summary:
The Waisman Center is dedicated to the advancement of knowledge about human development, developmental disabilities, and neurodegenerative diseases throughout the lifespan. One of 15 centers of its kind in the United States, the Waisman Center encompasses laboratories for biomedical and behavioral research, several scientific research cores, and a clinical biomanufacturing facility for the production of pharmaceuticals for early stage human clinical trials. In addition to its research efforts, the Center provides an array of services to people with developmental disabilities, offers numerous educational and outreach programs to young children and their families, and trains scientists and clinicians who will serve our nation in the future.
Binaural hearing refers to being able to integrate information that the brain receives from the two ears. Binaural hearing is known to help us with the ability to listen in noisy, complex auditory environments, and to localize sound sources. The Binaural Hearing and Speech Laboratory at the Waisman Center (PI: Ruth Litovsky) studies binaural hearing in persons who have typical hearing and in persons who are deaf and use cochlear implants (CIs). In addition, individuals with Down Syndrome are studied to understand the association between hearing loss, cognition, language and brain function and structure. The Audiology Researcher will work closely with the Binaural Hearing and Speech Laboratory’s research team consisting of the Principal Investigator, Research Program Coordinator, research staff, graduate students, and undergraduate students.
The Audiology Researcher will provide technical expertise in binaural hearing research, conduct experiments including speech understanding, sound localization, binaural hearing, eye tracking, EEG and cognitive measures, collect data, document results and assist with publication. They will be responsible for downloading cochlear implant maps and creating maps using lab-use-only processors. The Audiology Researcher will assist and train staff with fitting hearing aids used for research purposes. Additionally, they will work closely with research staff on updating IRB protocols as well as data deidentification and preparation of data for analysis.
Responsibilities:
Provides technical expertise to fundamental and/or applied scientific research under the direction of senior research personnel or faculty.
- 30% Collects and analyzes basic research data, conducts experiments and interviews, and documents results according to established policies and procedures
- 20% Conducts literature reviews, prepares reports and materials, and disseminates information to appropriate entities and assists with publications
- 20% Trains individuals and groups on equipment operations, research protocols, and techniques within a specialized laboratory or research area
- 5% Assists with the development of research methodologies and procedures
- 5% Identifies concerns and recommends solutions to leadership
- 5% Assists in developing grant applications and proposals to secure research funding
- 10% Schedule participants and communicate about expectations during research participation
- 5% Assists the lab in preparing recruitment materials and building relationships with community partners to recruit participants

Education:
Required
Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in Psychology, Speech Language Pathology, Audiology, Education, or related fields.
Preferred
Master’s Degree in Audiology.
Highly Preferred
A Doctorate Degree in Audiology (AuD).
Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will have the following required experiences:
Training experience in the areas listed below will be considered.
* Six months to 1 year of experience in hearing research.
* First-hand experience in assessing hearing loss.
* Experience fitting hearing aids and/or cochlear implants.
* Experience conducting hearing screenings and hearing evaluations.
* Experience using standard audiometric equipment (e.g. audiometers, tympanometers, and sound level meters).
Well-qualified candidates will have the following preferred experiences:
* Experience working directly with adult and child patients who use hearing aids and or cochlear implants.
* Experience with EEG.
* Experience setting map parameters for cochlear implant patients and fitting hearing aids
* Experience following clinical or research protocols or standard operating procedures
* Experience scheduling clinical visits and coordinating teams.
License/Certification:

Licensure as an Audiologist in the State of Wisconsin

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Minimum $55,000 ANNUAL (12 months)

Additional Information:
Occasional evening or weekend work hours may be required.

Must complete HIPAA training and receive certification within the first 5 days of employment and annually thereafter within 5 days of notification.
Reporting requirements must be completed in a timely manner, including but not limited to effort reporting and outside activities reporting.
