Position Overview

Responsible for assisting in the development, implementation, execution and management of public relations, communications, and special events pertaining to college activities.  Represents the Dean or Associate Dean on various university committees. Reports to the Dean.

Job Duties

Communications/Publications Efforts:

  • Determines appropriate strategies for branding the message of the college, to include follow-up and coordination with appropriate internal and external agencies.
  • Develops and manages the development and execution of all college promotional materials in conjunction with the various university offices.
  • Designs and prepares conceptual ideas consistent with college communications strategy including alternative approaches.
  • Develops, budgets, designs, and coordinates promotional collateral efforts including, but not limited to, brochures, publications, newsletters, and videos. 
  • Determines the cost and effectiveness of each promotional program and modifies the program to accomplish college goals and objectives.
  • Develops and maintains files of resource materials and samples to assist in idea development and effective college communication vehicles.
  • Responsible for the overall theme, format, layout, and appearance of college communications.
  • Edits and prepares copy to be included in communications/publications consistent with college objectives.
  • Works with artwork, photographs, print styles/color, paper size, fonts, and publication components.
  • Oversees all electronic communications including email blasts and internal/external newsletters.
  • Assists the CBA assigned Development Officer in the University Foundation with communication and promotion of college events and receptions.
  • Assists department chairs and faculty in developing targeted promotional materials.
  • Coordinates story ideas and coverage with University Relations to ensure widespread coverage of all newsworthy stories including events, awards, and people of interests.
  • Coordinates efforts with the college’s web designer to create a pleasing, eye-catching, and consistent look and content for the school’s web presence.
  • Ensures that website is maintained and updated on a timely basis.
  • Writes copy for the website and oversees website content including CBA eNews.
  • Strategizes and manages the college’s social networking initiatives.
  • Coordinates the college’s participation in University Premiere Days.

Communications/publications strategy:

  • Assists, in collaboration with the deans of the college, the overall communications and publications strategy for college enhancement of its regional and national visibility and reputation.
  • Responsible for ensuring the strategy is coordinated and implemented.
  • Assures ongoing assessment of results in achieving college goals.

Special Events

  • Plans, budgets, and coordinates events initiated in the Dean’s office to include beginning year and semester events, homecoming events, Southwest Business Symposium (SWBS), spring awards ceremony, alumni and donor functions, UCO’s PGA Golf Management functions, and other special programs.
  • Designs, prepares, and arranges for printing of brochures, invitations, and program materials in support of events.
  • Assists with the budgeting and purchasing of materials in support of CBA special events.
  • Assists the Foundation in coordinating events associated with CBA development activities.

Qualifications/Experience Required

Bachelor’s degree. Three years of responsible experience in public relations, marketing, special events, or fund raising, preferably at a public or private higher education institution, or comparable volunteer experience. Experience in the operation of computers and software such as Microsoft Word, Publisher, PowerPoint, Excel, Access.  

Qualifications/Experience Preferred

Master’s degree. Major course work in Communications or Public Relations.   Experience in Adobe CS3 or higher.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Good supervisory skills. Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal, human relations, public relations, and organizational skills. Computer proficiency preferably in Microsoft Office. Ability to work independently, handle multiple tasks simultaneously, and interact professionally with all segments of the University community. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Must be detail oriented. Knowledgeable writer and editor familiar with Associated Press Style.
