Job Summary:
This position is responsible for independently planning, coordinating, and implementing various communications, outreach, and event strategies designed to support the department’s strategic priorities; while working closely with other college, department level, and UW Foundation communication professionals. The Communication Specialist will help the department engage with a variety of communication modes including websites, video, print and social media, and provide initiative to embrace emerging communication trends. This position requires an understanding of the needs and interests of the department’s stakeholders and the ability to work with a variety of internal and external constituencies.
Responsibilities:
Develops and drafts communication content and assists in the execution of the communications strategy in support of unit communication goals.
- 10% Monitors reach and effectiveness of communication campaigns, projects, and initiatives
- 10% Plans editorial content according to established goals and objects
- 20% Communicates with stakeholders to verify requests and identify editorial resources
- 20% Writes, edits, and publishes content for various communication projects and marketing platforms to align with strategic initiatives and established communication campaigns
- 20% Provides project management and execution of communications programs, initiatives, and tactical plans
- 10% Interacts with alumni, advancement officers, donors and faculty to cultivate and maintain relationships that promote the growth of the teaching and research mission of the department.
- 10% Plans and executes department events

Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
2+ years experience in event planning, executive assistance, or communications.
Canva, Adobe Suite, or equivalent graphic design program.
Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, and WordPress.
Excellent written communication skills as evidenced by writing sample and cover letter.
Preferred Qualifications:
Website and social media experience.
Communications experience including Outreach, Stakeholder development and engagement.

They will also have a team-oriented work style, a proven ability to focus and independently oversee and organize multiple projects simultaneously and with tight deadlines, strict attention to detail with excellent time management and organizational skills, strong communication, independent problem-solving skills, and critical and conceptual thinking skills.
