This position is a part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University
of Alberta (AASUA).
In accordance with the Administrative and Professional Officer Agreement, this full-time continuing position
offers a comprehensive benefits package found on our Benefits Overview page and annual salary range of $67,159 – $111,927.
Location – Work takes place in person at the University of Alberta Botanic Garden in Parkland County near Devon,
Alberta.

About the Botanic Garden
The
University of Alberta Botanic Garden is a stunning 240-acre award-winning visitor attraction located 15 minutes southwest of Edmonton, with
cultivated gardens and plant collections, indoor showhouses, and extensive natural areas. Highlights of the University of Alberta Botanic
Garden, which was established in 1959, include the world-renowned and award-winning Aga Khan Garden; the Kurimoto Japanese Garden; tropical,
temperate and arid showhouses; alpine, herb, rose, peony, lilac, lily, and primula collections; Native Peoples Garden; trial beds and much
more.
Position Summary
As the Garden embarks on the implementation of a new Master Plan, the Customer and
Market Development Manager plays a pivotal role in materializing the vision, mission, values and strategic pillars by planning, organizing
and leading the development of a customer and market models that will result in $1M+ profits per year. In order to do so, the incumbent,
using initiative, creativity, drive and collaboration, leverages the expertise of service centers to help deploy and formalize the
discovery, validation, creation and building phases of the customer and market development model. Serving as an organizational leader, this
position serves as a member of the leadership team, is a key public face of the Garden, is one of the primary stewards of the guest
experience at the Garden, and is an enthusiastic advocate internally and externally for making the Garden beautiful and engaging for others.
Duties
To grow into a financially self-sustained destination of choice that creates 5-star purposeful
botanical experiences around themes such as horticulture and gardening, botanical art and design, science and the environment, health and
wellness, IDEA (Inclusivity, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility), and local gastronomy, the Customer and Market Development Officer:
- Works with the Director and the Strategic Initiatives Officer to establish annual profit-generation goals, operating budget and
results reporting. - Develops strategic plans to appropriately communicate the needs and priorities of the organization.
- Develops a strategy for effective engagement, including both traditional and social media, and ensures rapport with members of the
community to increase awareness and appreciation for the organization. - Leads the design, implementation and fine-tuning of business
models and feedback loops using input from internal and external stakeholders. - Implements strategies focused on growth of new
members, retention of current members, re-enrolling lapsed members, and upgrading of membership categories. - Builds an active,
engaged and growing community of support and interest. - Shapes the communications to general and targeted audiences, supervising the
development and production of the director’s communications, the annual report, bi-annual magazine, monthly newsletter, and digital
content. - Researches and identifies new funding opportunities (foundation, corporate, government and/or individual) to support the
organization’s operations, programs, special events and capital projects.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree and evidence of continuing education commensurate with being a thought-leader.
- Three or more years of
leadership experience, preferably within a largely self-funding organization. - Knowledge of the principles and best practices of
botanical gardens, museums, interpretation, and experiential learning. - Strong acumen for setting and attaining objectives, key
results and profit targets. - Experience with core concepts of human psychology, consumer behavior, market research and analysis,
systemic design, strategic planning, innovation and social entrepreneurship, user experiences, business strategy, business models, value
propositions, etc. - Excellent knowledge of related industry strategies.
- Knowledge of analysis methods to drive improvements
through the application of established continuous improvement processes. - Successful grant-writing and reporting experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced degree – Masters degree preferred.
- Background in
business, hospitality or a related discipline. - Previous senior management experience is an asset.
- Experience leading a
team, preferably in a unionized environment.
