Job Summary
The Sports Information Director is responsible for all sports information and promotion of the University’s NAIA sports, including the entirety of electronic media and all other sports-related publications. In addition, all obligations to the conferences (i.e. AMC) as well as to the NAIA must be fulfilled. The Sports Information Director is responsible for all Athletics communications, helping to promote and advance Hornet Athletics. The position will coordinate all sports information and media relations functions for the Hornets and their intercollegiate sports.
Essential Functions
- Media link between all athletics teams, appropriate media outlets, conferences (i.e. AMC), NAIA, opponents and HSSU community.
- Complete timely updates of the athletic department website including but not limited to news, scores, statistics, photographs, biographies, schedules, contact information, and upcoming events.
- Accurate statistical record keeping at athletics events and providing data for coaches and media at the appropriate time.
- Write and distribute post-game, pre-season outlook, season wrap-up, and recognition press releases to media outlets including hometown media outlets of Harris-Stowe State University student/athletes.
- Coordinate the development of and/or assume responsibility for all athletic department publications, sport media events, and social media (i.e. media guides, game-day programs, brochures, press conferences, Facebook, Twitter.)
- Work closely with colleagues in Communications to strategize, implement, and accomplish a consistent and premier level of institutional, and Hornet athletic visibility.
Oversee all game-day press box, table, program sales, ticket personnel and media/radio accommodations. - Report statistical information and results to the AMC conference office and NAIA if applicable.
- Produce all sports information through, but not limited to, writing, desktop publishing, web and social media posting and graphic design
- Perform and/or staff on game days the following: official’s scorekeeper/statistician, scoreboard operator, PA announcer, music coordinator and video board operator. Staff all home contests and any postseason tournaments held at the Emerson Performance Center and outdoor athletics facilities, which may include Work-Study students, volunteers, interns and occasional freelance opportunities
- Manage game day press box and table operations
- Responsible for various aspects of the Athletics website including: all content creation, posting and management, and strategic and design objectives
- Responsible for timely and accurate dissemination of information to media outlets, all social media communications, plus the research and integration of new technology platforms to engage fans
- Develop external media relationships and advance the relationships in an effort to augment media coverage of the Hornets locally, regionally, nationally and globally
- Generate compelling story ideas surrounding the program for internal and external distribution
- Generate and submit conference and national award nominations
- Work successfully with student-athletes, various Athletics personnel, the University’s on-campus Office of Communications, and other key campus constituents
- Perform other duties as assigned
Minimum Education and Experience
Minimum qualifications: Bachelor’s degree preferably in journalism, sport management or a related field, plus two years of experience within sports information or athletics communications at the intercollegiate level.
Preferred qualifications: Master’s degree preferably in journalism, sport management, or a related field and 3-5 years of experience within sports information or athletics communications at the intercollegiate level. Website content management, strong organizational writing, interpersonal and communication skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Statecrew, Dakstats and Adobe Creative Suite are a plus.
Knowledge, Skills and Responsibilities
Educate coaches and student-athletes on effective methods of media interaction; recruit, hire, train, and manage student workers and game-day staff.
