The District of West Vancouver Parks Department has exciting opportunities for a permanent full-time and a replacement temporary full-time Equipment Operator III positions. An Equipment Operator III operates and maintains heavy mobile equipment of a complex nature in accordance to competency standards, safety practices, regulations as well as performing manual work. The successful candidate must be skilled in the operation of rubber tire backhoes (primarily John Deere controls), and excavators, working knowledge in the operation and use of front-end loaders, and skid steers would also be considered an asset.

This position will be responsible for:

  • Operating various equipment including but not limited to: excavator, mini loader, backhoe, chipper, loaders in a variety of tasks including maintenance and construction of parks, trails, playgrounds, etc;
  • Operating a tandem axle flat deck truck (G.V.W. 20,000 kgs.) and attached Hiab crane equipment or equivalent in the loading and unloading of a variety of materials, tools and equipment.
  • Washing, cleaning and making service repairs (add fluid, adjust brakes, replace bulbs, etc.) to equipment as required;
  • Performing daily equipment inspections and submitting inspection reports;
  • Performing a variety of park landscape construction duties using the assigned equipment; and,
  • Performing other duties including manual labor as required.

The preferred candidate will posses considerable experience in the operation of various equipment as applied to general parks construction and maintenance work and operating same in congested conditions; good knowledge of the rules of safe operation and the precautions necessary to avoid accidents or machine damage; some knowledge of the methods, practices and tools used in servicing and making adjustments to such equipment; the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; and, mechanical aptitude along with adequate physical stamina to permit performance of assigned duties in all types of weather.

The successful candidate has completed senior secondary school and possesses considerable experience or training in the operation of this or similar equipment and construction machinery used in a variety of construction or maintenance tasks. A valid Class 5 British Columbia Driver’s Licence is required. A valid Class 3 BC Licence with an Air Brake endorsement and/or an Operator’s certificate in accordance with WorkSafe BC’s Occupational Health & Safety Regulation would be considered an asset.

Position Status:
WVMEA (Union) – Permanent, Full-time & Replacement Temporary Full-Time

Hours of Work:
40 hours per week (hours and days of work may vary)

Rate of Pay:
Permanent Full-Time – $34.40 per hour
Replacement Temporary Full-Time – $34.40 plus 14% in lieu of benefits
