Field FireSmart Coordinator

The Role:
The Thompson-Nicola Regional District Field FireSmart Coordinator position primarily operates outdoors and supports wildfire preparedness week, prevention, and mitigation through public education, assessments, and mitigative work to reduce community risk from wildfires.

The Field FireSmart Coordinator will be responsible for the facilitation of FireSmart related activities within the TNRD. The position will ensure that the FireSmart activities are supported, developed, and implemented in accordance with Provincial guidelines as well as with the direction and policy provided by the TNRD Fire Protection Services Department.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for delivering and conducting FireSmart Home Ignition Assessments within the 10 Electoral Areas.
  • Plans, promotes, and supports community events such as Community Wildfire Preparedness Day, farmers markets, local sporting events, school presentations, trade shows and other public engagements. In conjunction with the Lead FireSmart Coordinator – organize, plan, and participate in community fuel mitigation events
  • Recruits, trains, and supervises Local FireSmart Representatives, FireSmart volunteers and facilitates FireSmart 101 Sessions over a variety of platforms.
  • Supports Fire Protection Services and Emergency Operations Centre during activations.
  • Works and travels to rural and remote areas.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

This is a full-time temporary position that runs from approximately April until December 2025 and is subject to grant funding.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education and Experience:

  • 3 years related experience
  • Experience working in local government
  • Knowledge of fire prevention, FireSmart, and emergency preparedness programs
  • Knowledge of fire and public safety education, fire service operation, and emergency management
  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent education

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to effectively deliver educational and outreach materials to a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Adaptable and highly organized and able to exercise independent judgement.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license
  • Clear Canadian Criminal Record Check
  • Physically and mentally capable of administrating the duties for public communication and the practical job of the role.

This position falls under the provisions of the Collective Agreement with the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 900.  The placement of the FireSmart Coordinator is at Pay Grade 8, which is $2,477.09 to $2,865.58 biweekly.
