Job Summary
The Front-End Web Developer is an indispensable member of the NCSA Creative Services ensemble. Entrusted with upholding and advancing the design standards of both NCSA and the University of Illinois, the person must work cross-functionally to collaborate with NCSA Public Relations and stakeholders. Their responsibility encompasses not just the NCSA main website, ncsa.illinois.edu, but also extends to designing and refining the Center’s 15+ microsites, ensuring each is a piece of a larger, strategic approach.
Duties & Responsibilities

Web development/design (75%):

  • Primary developer for the NCSA main website, 15+ microsites, and any future WordPress sites, themes and plugins required by the Center
  • Program custom functionality to drive website content and user interfaces using technologies such as WordPress, Elementor, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, and other web languages and related apps
  • Provide support for WordPress themes (and other Center-related WordPress themes and plugins) through the NCSA ticketing system, Creative Services project management system, email, and NCSA Slack channels
  • Provide end-user support for the NCSA main website and microsites
  • Work with providers of website content tools, including campus-level offices like Public Affairs, NCSA Business IT, NCSA IT, NCSA Security team, and other groups on campus and outside vendors to develop and implement secure and effective applications to deliver dynamic and client-driven content
  • Work with a team to deliver projects including but not limited to design, code review and testing
  • Conduct regularly scheduled maintenance, security updates, and backups for websites and microsites
  • Contribute to and work within the project management structure for the team
  • Scope out requested work, propose solutions and timelines for stakeholders and advise best practices for future development endeavors
  • Collaborate with graphic designers, content strategists, copywriters and other creative professionals
  • Maintain adherence to brand style guidelines set forth by the NCSA MarComm leadership in cooperation with University style.

Documentation & Training (15%):

  • Investigate and evaluate new standards and technologies suitable for Center and department needs
  • Document tools and techniques when creating new functionality for websites
  • Update maintenance logs and store website backups

Other Creative Support (10%):

  • Provide event support including conference attendance as needed
  • Other duties and responsibilities as needed

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Any one or any combination totaling two (2) years (24 months) from the following categories:
    • College coursework that includes Information Technology (IT), IT Management, Programming, IT systems, or a closely related discipline, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
      • 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
      • Associate degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
      • 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
      • Bachelor’s degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)
    • Work experience in IT-related functions, such as hardware/software support, programming, network design, network engineering, IT systems integration, or closely related field. 
  • Demonstrated experience in front-end web development or a similar developer-related field.
  • Demonstrated experience managing WordPress websites
  • Experience with web technologies ex. (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP)

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3+ years of professional experience in front-end web development or a similar developer-related field
  • 2+ years of experience managing WordPress websites
  • Strong understanding of web technologies, including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript and PHP
  • Experience effectively communicating technical aspects with clients
  • Experience with developing custom WordPress blocks using JavaScript/React
  • Experience with ReactJS
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite
  • Experience with responsive design techniques
  • Experience developing and testing for WCAG 2.0 AA web accessibility
  • Experience working in or with higher education
  • Preference will be extended to candidates who bring supplementary skills to the table, like motion graphics, information architecture, and other expertise that can further enrich the role and elevate our team

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5031 – Information Technology Technical Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 12/18/2023. Salary is commensurate with experience.
