Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of High school Graduation
Experience: Candidates should have 2 years experience in the relevant field
Physical Requirements:
- The candidates should be able to lift and move heavy materials and equipment often and operate manual and power tools and equipment frequently
- The candidates should have normal physical abilities and normal vision and hearing abilities
- The candidates should be able to work outside in all weather conditions continuously and handle exposure to equipment noise occasionally
- The candidates should be able to work in an environment where protective measures must be taken to avoid exposure to chemicals and fertilizers occasionally
- The candidates should be able to work in close proximity to moving traffic occasionally and willing to substitute in a more senior position
Other Requirements:
- The candidates should be able to organize and prioritize work and understand and apply a variety of skilled maintenance techniques used in various Parks trades
- The candidates should be able to use industrial parks equipment, hand tools, and power equipment
- The candidates should be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships and deal effectively with the public and outside agencies
- The candidates should be able to work and operate equipment safely and Certified Irrigation Technicians Levels 1 and 2 (24 hours)
- The candidates should have a current and valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s Licence and a certificate in horticulture (1 year)
Responsibilities:
- The candidate should be able to work with or under the direction of a qualified trades person and plant, prune, and maintain trees
- The candidate should be able to prepare and maintain horticultural areas, including working in the greenhouse
- The candidate should be able to renovate and maintain parks, playing fields, boulevards, and other turf areas
- The candidate should be able to construct and maintain park equipment, hard infrastructure, and furniture and maintain irrigation and drainage systems and water, fertilize, seed, and cultivate
- The candidate should be able to grow, propagate, plant, and maintain various annual, perennial, and specialty plants, as well as other nursery stock and trees and prepare, construct, and repair hanging baskets, window boxes, and displays
- The candidate should be able to inspect for pest and health problems, apply pest controls, and conduct soil testing and inventories as required and make recommendations on hard and soft landscape improvements
- The candidate should be able to operate a variety of parks industrial equipment such as industrial trucks and tractors with attachments and provide instructions and information to other staff and occasionally respond to general enquiries from the public and other departments
- The candidate should be able to operate various hand tools and power equipment such as shovels, line trimmers, rototillers, electric shears, riding mowers, chainsaws, ditch-witches, and turf-cutters
