Departmental Overview
This position is part of a team responsible for the design and implementation of communications for the Division of Student Affairs’ initiatives that serve the entire UC Berkeley campus. This team works collaboratively with central campus offices (Public Affairs, University Relations), respective functional owners called “clients” from a variety of departments (Financial Aid and Scholarships, Enrollment Management, Dean of Students, Residential and Student Service Programs including housing and dining), and partner offices (academic units, Administration and Finance) to successfully launch and sustain Student Affairs communications initiatives.

Responsibilities
- Under general supervision of the Senior Web Developer/Applications Programmer IV and in collaboration with the greater team, designs, develops, modifies, debugs and evaluates basic programs for functional areas by applying moderately complex application programming concepts – primarily in the WordPress or Drupal environments.
- Analyzes existing programs or works to formulate logic for moderately complex new systems, devises procedures, prepares flowcharting, performs coding, data analysis, and tests/debugs programs through the application of professional programming concepts.
- Designs and uses basic relational databases.
- Executes test plans in collaboration with the web team.
- Develops conversion and system implementation plans.
- Gathers and analyzes data to prepare system and programming documentation.
- Assists with implementation of changes in development, maintenance, documentation, and system standards.
- Regularly reports progress on projects.
- Understands industry practices and system-wide, university, and department policies and procedures relating to WordPress, accessibility, security, and data analytics effectively integrating this into work assignments.
- Trains users in adoption, conversion, and implementation of systems.
- Clearly explains technical work to clients and the team, as needed.

Required Qualifications
- Intermediate skills associated with software specification, design, modification, implementation and deployment of small to medium-scale scope.
- Intermediate knowledge and experience in WordPress, including WordPress theming and subtheming, as well as maintenance and administration of multiple websites and modules.
- Demonstrated ability to follow software specifications.
- Thorough knowledge of programming and style sheet languages such as PHP, MySQL, HTML and CSS3.
- Knowledge with any of the following: Bootstrap, JQuery, JS, other front end skills; Drush, Linux command line, Git, Subversion, etc.
- Skilled at supporting the development and implementation of ideas and correctly identifying and effectively solving problems.
- Experience integrating open source and third-party applications into existing systems.
- Thorough knowledge of responsive design principles and best practices.
- Requires intermediate knowledge of secure software development and knowledge of other related areas of IT such as hosting, third party integrations, etc.
- Requires intermediate skills associated with programming design, modification and implementation.
- Familiarity with WCAG accessibility standards as well as state, DOE, and university policies and guidelines in accessibility.
- Familiarity with institutional processes, procedures, and applicable rules and regulations for web communications, including campus style guides and web standards including tools like Siteimprove.
- Experience integrating open source and third-party applications into existing systems
- Experience assisting with end-user support needs, troubleshooting, and issue resolution
- Experience taking active ownership and accountability for all assigned projects through final delivery, meeting all timeline milestones and delivering within the approved budgets
- Ability to be self-motivated, work independently or as part of a team, able to learn quickly, meet deadlines and demonstrate problem-solving skills.
- Skills in diagramming, wireframing and using design tools
- Knowledge of and/or ability to learn department processes and procedures including the use of Asana, Slack, Zoom, Google Hangout, and other communications tools
- Skills needed to develop conversion and system implementation plans.
- Ability to understand business needs and how business systems can support those needs.
- Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Must be able to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner to technical and non-technical staff, including the ability to interact with cross-functional teams to ensure complete delivery of web applications.
- Experience working in team environment with people from diverse backgrounds and communities.
Education/Training:
- Bachelor’s degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $40.23 – $42.15.
- This is a 100%, full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
- This position is non-exempt and paid bi-weekly.
- This is a remote-friendly position, eligible for up to 100% remote capability.
