Kōrero mō te tūranga – About the role

Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington seeks a Lecturer in Media and Communication, School of English, Film, Theatre, Media and Communication, and Art History. 

Two new Communication degrees were launched at Te Herenga Waka- Victoria University of Wellington in 2020: the Bachelor of Communication and the Master of Communication. 

Enrolments in both undergraduate and postgraduate courses have increased since these degrees were introduced. We aim to appoint a suitably qualified lecturer to contribute to the Media and Communication Programme from 2024. 

This is an exciting opportunity to join this programme, which is located at one of the oldest universities in Aotearoa/New Zealand and located in the country’s capital city. 

The successful candidate will:

  • Have a PhD in Communication or Media Studies, or a related field
  • Demonstrate a commitment to and/or a track record of research in Communication or Media Studies
  • Be able to engage and mentor students taught and to supervise student research
  • Show a capacity for collegiality and for contributions to programme administration
  • Have an awareness of our obligations, as a staff and a university, to the Treaty of Waitangi.

You will be a highly motivated individual who can take the initiative and manage a variety of concurrent academic tasks.

You will be a forward-thinker who demonstrates a capacity for high quality and innovative teaching and research. 

Key requirements: 

  • A PhD in Communications, Media Studies, or a related field
  • Successful experience in designing and delivering courses and/or classes in Media and Communication
  • Published academic research and/or a capacity to produce academic publications in Media and Communication
  • An ability to build positive relationships with colleagues and students

Our team is responsible for delivering a range of Media and Communication courses to undergraduate and postgraduates as well as for supervising students completing Masters and PhD degrees.

We combine this teaching and supervision with a programme of individual academic research, aiming to produce works that can engage the interest of leading academic publishers and their readers.
