About the Role

The Japanese Studies Program at the University of Melbourne is one of the oldest and biggest academic programs of its kind in Australia, teaching language, society and culture.     

A Lecturer/Senior Lecturer will play a major role or provide a significant degree of leadership in scholarly, research and professional activities relevant to the profession. The research work of a Senior Lecturer will be acknowledged at a national level as being influential in expanding the knowledge of their discipline.  A Senior Lecturer will normally provide leadership in research, including research training and supervision.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Subject coordination including the supervision of sessional tutors (administrative and academic)  
• Delivery of subjects in Japanese language and studies, including mega subjects   
• Curriculum design and innovation, including cross-disciplinary approaches  
• High quality publications arising from scholarship and research in line with the Faculty of Arts minimum expectations    
• Active engagement in service, leadership and coordination roles in the discipline, School and Faculty demonstrating respectful, inclusive behaviours at all times and building trust amongst colleagues  

Who We Are Looking For

You bring excellence in teaching with the ability to initiate course development, effective leadership and communication skills, a track record of supervising honours and postgraduate theses, and a commitment to professional and collegial behaviour at a very high standard. Additionally, you demonstrate capacity for multidisciplinary research, experience in community engagement, and the ability to build networks and partnerships. 

You will also have:

• A completed PhD in Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Language Policy/Pedagogy or other language-focused disciplines. 
• A developing or strong track record in research and publications in Japanese Studies. 
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching Japanese language in higher education. 
• Developing or demonstrated capacity to attract research grants, especially for multidisciplinary and collaborative research.
