Job Description


Position Summary

Reporting to Departmental leadership of two academic departments in Columbia University’s
School of Engineering, Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering (CEEM) and Earth and Environmental Engineering (EEE), and also reporting
to the Executive Director of Communications, the Marketing and Communications Specialist works closely with the staff and faculty of the two
departments to serve as the primary communications lead. The incumbent works proactively with CEEM and EEE to develop and implement
strategies that increase visibility and reputation by leveraging the websites, programming, events, and branding across all distribution
channels. This position engages with the central communications office for guidance on best practices, branding, and any broader strategic
communications initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • (30%)Content and Brand Management:

    The
    Marketing and Communications Specialist oversees the implementation of Columbia Engineering School and CEEM & EEE Department brand
    guidelines in all materials; collaborates across Departmental staff and consults with faculty and staff experts as needed, meets respective
    communications and marketing needs, and ensures the accuracy of communications and timeliness of efforts.

    The Marketing and
    Communications Specialist proactively gathers information about CEEM & EEE Departmental activities, research, and events to create
    engaging and informative content that resonates with respective audiences. Curates interesting facts and creates stories from the respective
    communities: staff, faculty, students, and scholars (BS, MS, PhD, and Postdoctoral). It promotes achievements as well as unique and
    exceptional offerings.

    Participates in team-based marketing planning to align strategies and deadlines across various concurrent
    projects and initiatives. Utilizes various software programs and creative platforms to develop and deliver content and marketing materials
    in multiple formats to various audiences.

  • (25%)Website and Social Media Management:

    The Marketing and
    Communications Specialist is responsible for updating CEEM & EEE websites with the latest news, announcements, and relevant information.
    Additionally, the specialist manages the two Departments’ social media outlets to ensure consistent and timely communication.

    Ensures values of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility are represented in communications, and that communications strategy is
    consistent and reflects Columbia Engineering School’s and CEEM & EEE’s strategic vision and mission. Assists in researching,
    developing, compiling, and editing materials in various formats (i.e., reports, presentations, brochures, posts, websites) for CEEM &
    EEE.

  • (20%)Newsletter Management:

    The Marketing and Communications Specialist produces bi-monthly or
    semester e-newsletters, consolidating highlights and achievements in the respective Departments, and conveys this effectively to the
    community. Collaborate with the central Communications and Marketing team’s colleagues and others stakeholders across the university
    to create and maintain CEEM and EEE website content that is engaging, relevant, dynamic, and accurate.

    The Marketing and
    Communications Specialist actively contributes to a positive team atmosphere, supporting diversity, equity, inclusion efforts and ensuring
    an inclusive, welcoming, and professional environment. The work product represents the university’s values at all times. S/he collaborates
    on audience demographic and opinion surveys.

  • (20%) Social Media, Public Relations, and Engagement:

    The
    Marketing and Communications Specialist strategically plans and oversees social media content for CEEM’s and EEE’s Department
    channels. Creates and monitors posts to ensure accuracy. Builds and maintains relationships with appropriate media outlets and other
    partners.

    Proactively makes suggestions for implementing best practices in communications: keeps up-to-date on marketing and
    communications trends and tools; manages relationships with various internal and external stakeholders; acts as a collaborative resource in
    curating marketing plans for relevant initiatives, groups, events, and programs within CEEM and EEE.

  • (5%) Perform
    other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

● Bachelor’s degree in
communications, marketing, English, public relations, or related field

● 3-5 years experience in communications, marketing web
strategy, or related field.

● Significant professional experience developing and writing high-quality original content for a wide
variety of delivery channels, as well as editing the communications work of others

● Significant professional experience developing
and executing marketing and communications strategies for different stakeholders utilizing a full range of traditional, multimedia, and
digital channels

● Strong analytical skills and data-driven decision-making.

● Demonstrated excellent verbal, written,
presentation, interpersonal, listening, and networking skills

● Excellent project management, organizational, analytical, creative,
and critical thinking skills involving multi-faceted initiatives, with a demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and strategy goals


Strong collaborative working style with the ability to work both independently and as a member of a team

● Demonstrated awareness and
implementation of best practices in fostering diversity, equity, inclusion, and access principles

● Ability to occasionally work
extended or flexible hours in support of school needs and activities

● Familiarity with content management systems (CMS) and project
management tools like Asana
