Personal Trainer
Overview
This is recreation work involving designing and instructing a comprehensive, individualized, safe, effective and appropriate fitness program for a client/participant or small group of clients/participants. An incumbent will: perform baseline testing to assess physical readiness, modify fitness programs to address injuries and or diagnosed limitations and medical conditions, discuss goals, review past and present lifestyle choices such as level of exercise activity, and gather and research information as needed to help clients/participants optimize their health and wellness. The incumbent provides advice and guidance within their scope of practice and ensures the safe and proper use of equipment. An incumbent provides instruction and education to clients/participants on various fitness exercises and delivers specifically tailored, personalized programs and training sessions based on the unique goals and abilities of the client(s) and participant(s). Duties are performed within established guidelines, but some independent action and initiative is exercised within the limits of applicable policies and procedures, referring difficult or unusual problems to a Supervisor.
Examples of key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Consults with client(s)/participant(s) to assess fitness readiness, discuss health history, injuries, physical limitations and or medical conditions, and assists clients/participants with SMART goal setting.
- Completes required in-take forms and waivers, and schedules training sessions based on the client(s)/participant(s) availability.
- Designs and implements individual exercise programs that align with the client(s)/participant(s) physical, mental and emotional needs; accurately tracks client’s/participants’ ongoing physical progress and adjusts exercises and/or fitness program as needed for short and long term success.
- Checks that equipment is in good working order and reports issues to their Supervisor.
- Develops and presents fitness and wellness related workshops.
- Enforces general rules of conduct, including facility guidelines and etiquette, proper attire and footwear, use of equipment, and other relevant city and departmental policies and procedures; maintains control and discipline of unruly clients as required.
- Accurately records client(s)/participant(s) training hours and prepares bi-weekly timesheet for payroll.
- Attends team meetings, education sessions, and fitness team events as requested.
- Provides First-Aid treatment as required; treats minor injuries; makes necessary arrangements for treatment of more serious accidents; completes accident/incident report forms; notifies Supervisor as required.
- Answers inquiries made by phone or in person regarding the facility and schedules.
- Performs other related work as required and according to each facility.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Broad knowledge of physical exercise, human physiology, movement mechanics, and the principles, practices and objectives of individual training.
- Ability to create safe and effective individualized fitness programs according to each client(s)/participant(s) needs and goals.
- Sound knowledge of various types of gym equipment, machines, and training techniques.
- Ability to demonstrate and explain correct form and exercise technique, providing clear instruction and education on the safe and proper use of equipment.
- Sound knowledge of applicable policies, safety regulations and rules governing the work performed.
- Ability to provide advice, guidance and referral services relative to health and fitness.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts; builds trust and rapport with client(s)/participants(s); deals tactfully and diplomatically with a variety of clients/participants; demonstrates effective leadership and professionalism; utilizes a variety of effective communication techniques
- Ability to prepare and maintain client progress records and reports.
- Physical strength, stamina and coordination to carry out the duties of the position.
- Ability to successfully clear a Police Information Check.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Completion of high school diploma (Grade 12 or equivalent).
- Completion of BCRPA Personal Trainer designation or equivalent.
- Completion of CPR Level C and AED Certification.
- Completion of Emergency First Aid Certification.
Preferred Qualifications and Experience:
- Degree/Diploma in a related such as Human Kinetics or Kinesiology.
- Six (6) months recent related experience, including working or volunteering in a fitness facility.
- Experience mentoring/coaching upcoming fitness attendants and or personal trainers.
- Additional BCRPA registration (Group Fitness, Aquatic Fitness, Yoga, Pilates, Older Adult etc.).
- Knowledge of a second language is an asset.
