Main Purpose and Function
There is a vacancy for a Planning Assistant III in the Planning, Urban Design, and Sustainability Department Community Planning. This position would provide technical and professional support to teams undertaking policy development and implementation in Planning, Urban Design and Sustainability, initially focused on the Plan Implementation Group in Community Planning

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Many of the duties associated with this position will involve support to planning professionals who are undertaking land use and built form analysis, preparing policies and presentations, and working with both the community and other agencies to ensure visions established through our community plans are implemented and build towards a healthier, more sustainable and equitable city. Duties will include:

  • Conducting surveys, research and analysis tasks (quantitative and qualitative data).
  • Preparing graphics work.
  • Assisting with policy development, Council Reports, presentation boards and materials.
  • Preparing mailing lists, notifications and other materials for public meetings.
  • Facilitating and/or taking detailed minutes for small group discussions, receiving and summarizing public comments, and maintaining web pages and social media accounts.
  • Preparing studies and analysis related to current zoning, policy and trends.
  • Providing support for the development of new policy.
  • Convening and collaborating with other City agencies to facilitate the delivery of community plan public benefits.
  • Performing other related duties/responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications
Education and Experience:

  • Completion of twelfth school grade or equivalent in Technical or Vocational school supplemented or including courses in drafting or graphics, along with Planning Assistant II experience or technical work experience of a planning nature. Or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • University degree in Planning would be considered an asset.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to work independently, on teams, and with the public, to complete assignments using sound professional techniques and judgment.
  • Proven ability to self-manage workload and meet time demands (e.g., prioritize tasks, communicate expected time frames for the delivery of items with staff and request assistance when needed).
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills (written and verbal)
  • Demonstrated sound research and analytical abilities and experience.
  • Working knowledge of zoning and land-use planning and regulations, land development economics, public space planning, and urban design principles is required.
  • Sound knowledge of ArcGIS, Microsoft Office Suite and graphics programs with strong graphic skills (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite) is required.
  • Ability to meet transportation requirements

Where operationally appropriate and subject to change, the City of Vancouver has a Flexible Work Program. This program allows staff to work remotely 1 – 4 days a week from locations that are a daily commutable distance from their work at a City worksite.  At this time this position is eligible to be part of the Flexible Work Program.
