We are seeking to appoint an outstanding and highly motivated individual to the role of Professor in the discipline of Tourism and Hospitality.
About the Role
The appointee should have experience of tourism and hospitality management in islands or small states and be aware of problems they commonly experience in developing tourism. He/she should also have a record of excellence in teaching and research supervision and will have a demonstrable commitment to academic leadership and to promoting and developing the programme throughout the South Pacific region. He/she will be a leading scholar and researcher with a proven history of academic publications and the ability to be entrepreneurial in attracting research funding. The appointee is expected to mentor and develop senior and junior academic staff, work with senior staff to develop the curriculum where needed, maintain and develop tourism and hospitality industry contacts, have an acute awareness of regional issues, from a social, economic and cultural perspective, and possess the ability to lead by example and initiative.
As a senior member of staff, the appointee is expected to work within a collegial environment, and to effectively represent the Discipline within the University as well as within the local and regional tourism and hospitality industry. He/she is expected to ensure that the Discipline and University mission statement and Strategic Plan and University policies are all implemented. Finally, the appointee is expected to ensure the highest quality educational experience for students at the University and that the Discipline continues to address the needs of its regional stakeholders and maintains its International Centre of Excellence in Tourism and Hospitality Education (THE-ICE) accreditation, which the discipline was awarded in 2010.
The Appointee shall mainly be responsible for the following;
- Provide academic leadership and foster excellence in research, teaching and scholarly activities in the discipline;
- Assume the role of substantive Head of School/Discipline and participate in School and University services;
- Develop and administer programmes in the discipline;
- Undertake course planning, development, coordination and delivery (including online and face to face teaching);
- Academic counselling and consultation with students;
The Person We Seek
To be considered for Professor position, applicants must have;
- A PhD in Tourism and Hospitality or related field and be a leading, international authority in this area;
- Extensive teaching experience;
- Made a sustained and excellent contribution at international level to academic research and leadership within the relevant discipline;
- Demonstrated sustained distinction in your interdisciplinary contributions;
- Championed academic standards and freedom;
- Demonstrated excellent communication skills, and the ability to network effectively and interact with a diverse range of students and staff;
- An outstanding track record in research, with outcomes of high quality and impact (including peer-reviewed publications, e.g. journal articles, book chapters, monographs), evidence of attracting external funding and/or of principal investigation in international research projects; and
- Proven experience in successfully recruiting and supervising research students to completion;
- Experience of tourism hospitality in islands or small states and awareness of problems commonly experienced in developing tourism;
- A distinguished record of research and publication in relevant fields;
- A successful record in masters and PhD level thesis supervision;
- Mentor and develop senior and junior academic staff;
- Ability to develop the curriculum in both traditional and new areas of tourism and hospitality especially at post graduate level;
- Leading scholar in tourism and hospitality and proven history of academic publications;
- Ability to work within a collegial environment and effectively represent the discipline within the university and the tourism hospitality industry.
Professor should also:
- Demonstrate excellence in teaching in a multicultural environment;
- Excellent written and oral communication skills;
- Experienced with distance and flexible learning.
The position is available for a term of 5 years and may be renewed by mutual agreement.
Salary Range: FJ $153,416 to $165,855 per annum.
The University may offer an attractive market loading to exceptional candidates.
