The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) is the national institute which prepares expert reports and opinions on questions of food, feed and chemical safety and consumer health protection in Germany on the basis of internationally recognised scientific assessment criteria. It advises the Federal Government and other institutions and interest groups in these areas. The BfR conducts its own research on topics that are closely linked to its assessment tasks. It is an institution with legal capacity within the portfolio of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL).
In the department Safety of Pesticides of the BfR is in the unit “Control and overall assessment of biocides” from immediately temporary for 2 years for the following position:

Part-time employment is possible. The fixed-term contract is based on the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz. The possibility of being taken on as a permanent employee is offered if the candidate proves his or her worth and the budgetary possibilities are met.
Tasks:
In the context of consumer health protection, the health risk assessment of plant protection products and biocidal products is one of the BfR’s legally assigned tasks. The tasks of the “Steering and Overall Assessment of Biocides” unit focus on coordinating the administrative processing of electronic authorisation and approval applications for biocidal active substances and products.
In detail, the tasks include
- Independent management of sub-processes of the legal tasks for health risk assessment in biocide authorisation and approval procedures in accordance with the German Chemicals Act and the European Biocides Regulation
- Independent compilation of scientific sub-reports on the toxicology of active substances and products, exposure assessment, residue assessment and assessment of analytical monitoring methods for the final risk assessment in accordance with the legally assigned authorisation tasks of the department
- Responsible collaboration and representation of the BfR in national and European committees for health risk assessment of biocidal products and active substances and for process optimisation
- Collaboration in the further development of test strategies and technical guidelines with special consideration of alternative test methods and modern scientific procedures for the health risk assessment of pesticides
- Collaboration in the optimisation and further development of procedures, including the requirements for IT systems and quality assurance in the management of legally assigned procedures
Your profile:
- Completed University degree (Master’s degree, diploma or comparable university degree) in Toxicology, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Chemistry, Biology or a comparable specialisation
- Doctorate
- Analytical thinking and strong ability to communicate even complicated scientific issues
- Strong communication and moderation skills
- Good computer skills as well as a conscientious way of working, flexibility and resilience are required
- Very good knowledge of written and spoken German and/or English
Desired:
- Stay abroad
- Ideally, several years of experience in the risk assessment of chemicals and/or completed further training as a specialised toxicologist
