Job Description

The University of Roehampton is seeking to appoint a Visiting Lecturer to join our History team to teach on our undergraduate History programme, specifically a module on ‘Introduction to Ancient History’ at Level 4. The appointment will involve leading and delivering this module and may also involve contributing to student project supervision and pastoral care.

The module outline is as follows and there would be the scope for the person appointed to embed their research specialism within this framework:

  • This module provides an opportunity for students to develop initial understanding of the ancient world, through a diachronic study of Greek and Roman history from fifth-century Athens to the early Roman Principate. The module will look at the main political, military, social, cultural, religious and economic events, developments and changes during seven centuries and will supply comparative insights of Greek and Roman civilizations. The module will also introduce students to the study of ancient evidence (from written to archaeological and iconographical sources) and to methods of historical analysis.

We encourage a blended learning approach to teaching, combining traditional lectures, seminars, practical sessions, and student-led discussions in our teaching approaches. We ensure our curriculum supports good student outcomes through engagement with employability and skill-led experiential learning. We also support students by providing activities and material that extend beyond scheduled contact time. There are currently resources for the majority of teaching to be covered.

Successful applicants will have experience in many of the blended teaching approaches listed above, as well as with supporting students, and marking assessments, at an undergraduate level. Industry experience is desirable as is experience with online learning environments. We are seeking individuals who are: student focused; demonstrate excellent interpersonal and analytical skills; and can work flexibly.

We are looking to appoint to start in January 2024, and will interview as we receive applications. Thus, please do not wait to apply if interested in the position/s.

The rate of pay for Visiting Lecturers is £55.00 per hour. This rate includes: contact time, preparation, marking, and annual leave. Additional marking and moderation and content development is paid at the rate of £25.96 per hour.  When required this will be agreed in advance by a Dean or Deputy Dean.

For an informal conversation about the role please email Dr Andrew Wareham at a.wareham@roehampton.ac.uk and/or Professor Fiona McHardy at f.mchardy@roehampton.ac.uk.
