Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno, Nevada Online department is recruiting for a Web Designer. This position reports to the Vice Provost, Online Learning and is primarily responsible for designing website user interfaces (“front-end” development) using modern development techniques and forward-thinking strategy. The position seeks to balance aesthetic design with robust usability, offering website visitors a better experience when trying to find information online. The position also consults on the integration of web-based technologies and works closely with Marketing & Communications to ensure all branding and accessibility requirements are met.

Duties include but are not limited to:

• Conceptualize individual website elements and whole interface designs, both independently and in collaboration with colleagues
• Develop prototypes using HTML, CSS and JavaScript that function in a web browser
• Confirm that prototypes work across web browsers, devices and platforms
• Work with colleagues and customers to ensure prototype designs are properly translated in the content management system
• Collaborate with with program point of contacts, and content experts within Nevada Online colleagues in planning and strategizing websites that achieve organizational objectives
• Maintain and update websites as needed
• Work with campus partners to interface between Peoplesoft and the Nevada Online website
• Analyze available data to make informed interface design decisions
• Research other institutions to assess best practices in higher education web design
• Stay up to date on industry-wide design trends and standards
• Stay up to date on web standards (HTML5, CSS3) and best practices

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree and two years of related work experience; OR

Master’s Degree and one year of related work experience

Related Experience: digital graphic design, experience with Adobe Creative Suite and/or end-users support of a content management system or related experience.

Department Information

Nevada Online is a newly formed department which is leading the online learning initiative for the University. This is a progressive department who supports faculty and students within the online modality of learning. The primary focus of this department is to support faculty to ensure online learners receive a quality education from anywhere at any time. Online learners are able to access numerous courses and programs offered by the same qualified faculty as campus.
