Job Description

If you are establishing your career as a scientist within advanced digitalized manufacturing and you are looking for a multi-partner consortium driven project for further developing and applying your advanced skills, it is right here in front of you. At DTU Construct, Section of Manufacturing Engineering, you will be at the forefront of developments in advanced laser-based processing and the digitalization of the manufacturing process chain.

Applications are now invited for 2 two-year Postdoc positions, within the field of advanced modelling of laser-based manufacturing, spanning competences in either advanced Multiphysics modelling of laser-based processing and/or advanced data-driven reduced-order modelling and optimization. Both the postdoc positions are a part of the Horizon Europe “DILAPRO” project, and are anchored at the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark.

The overall project aims to contribute towards the twin Green and Digital Transitions within European manufacturing via the development of two ground-breaking software tools for laser-based production of complex products. You will directly contribute towards the establishment of one of these tools, namely DILAFACT (Digital LaserFactory) – which will be a sustainable and scalable platform for laser process planning via Digital Twins of laser-material interactions, including additive, subtractive, and thermal processes.

More specifically, the positions will look towards developing and connecting advanced multi-physics models of laser-material interactions (during laser direct energy deposition, laser texturing and laser powder bed fusion) with models of microstructural evolution established within the overall DILAPRO project. Further, the positions will focus on model-order reduction approaches for enabling algorithm-driven optimization of the laser-based process and process planning. In addition, it will also  involve contributing to the development and deployment of advanced digital twins on a cloud-based infrastructure that supports the DILAFACT tool.

Responsibilities and qualifications

You will be responsible for the development of models and workflow tools supporting the DILAFACT tool. One focus of the positions will be to develop advanced and calibrated multi-physics and multi-scale computational models of three laser-based manufacturing processes. The conversion of these (and already existing) advanced high-fidelity models into robust, fast reduced order models will also be a focus of the postdoc positions, including ensuring their implementation on the DILAPRO digital infrastructure.

The work will involve active engagement with other consortium partners in a fast-paced R&D process, as well as encompass extensive dissemination activities (at conferences and seminars). Further, the candidates are expected to collaborate extensively with other colleagues working on modelling of AM and laser-based processes at DTU Construct. Both positions will be expected to collaborate extensively, and the specific distribution of activities will follow an AGILE approach.

In addition to the direct project related research, you will have the opportunity to conduct teaching related activities (as part of courses on advanced digital manufacturing) and disseminate your research through publication of papers.

We envision that:

  • You have an open mind and can think creatively in a computational and/or programming context.
  • You are interested in combining your physics-based modelling skills with data-driven analysis (or vice versa).
  • You are eager to elaborate on the newest research results, improve the ideas and test them by implementation.
