SUMMER READING CLUB ASSISTANT

The West Vancouver Memorial Library is seeking a post-secondary student to assist with the library’s Summer Reading Clubs and Book Buddies programs from approximately June 4, 2024 – August 6, 2024.  Designed to promote reading and libraries over the school break, the province-wide summer reading club attracts up to 2000 West Vancouver children and teens each year.

The successful candidate will explain how the Summer Reading Clubs works to kids and families, register youth in programs, engage kids and families in discussions about reading, create promotional materials/displays and interact with hundreds of young people during their weekly library visits. The successful candidate will also assist with our established Book Buddies program and other programs for kids and families.

The successful candidate will possess:

  • completion of grade 12
  • passion and enthusiasm for books, reading and working with kids and teens
  • the ability to communicate effectively with staff, children and parents, including ELL and newcomer families
  • the ability to follow written and oral instructions
  • the ability to work creatively, independently and as part of a team
  • facility with Microsoft applications, including Word and Excel
  • excellent organization and time management skills
  • experience working with youth and familiarity with children’s and teen literature would be an asset
  • experience or an interest in visual arts, crafts and/or maker activities would be an asset

This full time position is contingent on funding from Young Canada Works (YCW). Applicants must meet the YCW criteria which includes being 16-30 years of age and being currently enrolled in full-time studies in the semesters before and after the work term.

The successful candidate is required to supply a Police Information and a copy of their credentials.

Position Status:
Summer Student
Please note: participation in the WVMEA will be mandatory.

Hours of Work:
35 hours per week (hours and shifts may vary)

Rate of Pay:
$19.00 per hour + 4% in lieu of benefits
